Pre-charge sex crime investigations
The period before a charge is filed is the stage at which the most is decided and the least is understood. Police may ask for an interview, request access to a phone, arrange a recorded call, or execute a search warrant, and each of those is an evidence-gathering step rather than a chance to clear things up. What is said and handed over during that window is generally not recoverable afterwards.
